Richard M MacKenzie Ltd was founded in 1984 by Richard and Christine MacKenzie with a simple vision: to offer honest, high-quality joinery right here in Ross-shire.

As the business had grown from joinery to main contracting in the late 80’s to the early 90’s, the need for further employees and apprentices was apparent. Son in-law Andrew Deeth joined the business as an apprentice joiner in 1994, followed by eldest son Alan in 1998, both working through their apprenticeships and gaining valuable experience as site managers. Youngest of the 3 siblings Lewis joined the business in 2020 coming in from a Mathematics and Civil Engineering background. Together, we’ve grown with our community, always putting local relationships at the heart of what we do.

Today, we’re proud to be known across Ross-shire for our exceptional craftsmanship, trusted advice, and a hands-on approach that puts care into every detail. Our reputation is built on loyalty, genuine customer service, and that family touch—ensuring every project is completed to the highest standards.

Our Story

1984 - the beginning
Founded on family values
Richard & Christine MacKenzie established the company in 1984 with a simple vision: to create exceptional woodwork that combines traditional Scottish craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities. Starting from a small workshop in Tain, Richard’s passion for quality and attention to detail quickly earned a reputation among local homeowners and architects.
1998-2019 - Family Growth
Next Generation Joins
Andrew joined the company as an apprentice joiner in 1994, becoming part of the family in 2004 through marriage to Emma, Richard and Christine’s eldest sibling. Alan, their eldest son, started as an apprentice joiner in 1998, creating a strong family core within the business. Later, Lewis, the youngest son, brought a valuable civil engineering background when joining in 2020, adding fresh expertise and site knowledge.
2019- 2024- Leadership Transition & The latest generation
Stepping into leadership
In 2019, Richard and Christine moved toward semi-retirement, appointing Alan as Managing Director, with Andrew and Lewis also becoming directors while still involved in daily operations. The family legacy continues with the newest member, eldest grandson Callum, joining as an apprentice in 2025. Emma Deeth has played a key role supporting the business through project photography and social media over the last decade.
2024-Present - Modern Excellence
Leading the Highlands
Building on four decades of reputation, word of mouth and repeat business have transformed the company into a very highly rated joinery and building company within the Highland region with a well-equipped workshop and a fleet of vans. We have a team of skilled workers with decades of knowledge and a great work ethic.
